Tomato Blossoms!

For the first time this season, my tomato plant finally has some blossoms.  I am hope-hope-hoping that these blossoms set and bear fruit.  I can’t believe we haven’t had any fresh tomatoes this year!  The blasted heat is putting such a damper on this year’s fresh-from-the-container-garden salads.  There are times that I just want to pick up and move to a state that’s cooler year round.  It would be so great to garden in a place that isn’t hot as Hades eleven months out of the year, like South Texas …

What Are Heirloom Tomatoes?

You probably know that the word “heirloom” means something that is passed down from generation to generation. So what does the word “heirloom” mean to the world of tomatoes?
An heirloom tomato is a type of tomato that has existed–without genetic modification or hybridization–since approximately 1940. Some heirloom tomatoes, heirloom tomato seeds, and heirloom tomato plants are commercially-available, which means that you can purchase them from heirloom tomato suppliers. Another definition of heirloom tomatoes means that a particular type of tomato seeds are passed down through the generations. This involves Grandma …
