How to Pot Indoor Herbs

13 February 2012 No Comment

Just a quicky rant:

I saw an infomercial for an “indoor herb garden” kit that the merchant is promoting as an easy way to grow herbs indoors. It made me cringe! The merchant and promoters obviously  have no experience in container gardening, growing herbs, or growing herbs indoors. These guys are selling one large planter in which to grow ALL of the herb seeds they send you.

Nooooooooooooo!

The merchant obviously has no experience with container gardening, herbs, or growing herbs indoors. You should NEVER grow all of your herbs in one pot. Why? Because some herbs–like the mint family–are natural fighters; they will choke out all other plants, in an attempt to take over an entire growing area. Other herbs will affect the flavor of other herbs that are grown with them.

Bottom line: pot your indoor herbs separately. Just as each family needs their own home, every herb needs its own container to grow strong and healthy.
