Containers

One of the most important items you need to have a successful container garden is containers.   The type of container you use is entirely up to you.  You can use flower pots, buckets, crates, or anything else that can hold soil.  I once grew six heads of lettuce in an old wooden drawer from a broken nightstand.   You are only limited by your imagination and amount of things you have around your house.

Here are examples of some of the types of containers I use and recommend:

I use self-watering containers for some of my tomatoes and peppers. It helps to have my thirstier plants in self-watering containers because they can drink whenever they need it, and won’t suffer any stress if I happen to leave town for a few days.

I use rectangle flower boxes to plant herbs, as well as smaller vegetables that don’t need a lot of depth to grow (such as green onions and radishes).

I use large barrel containers like this to grow things that require more room and depth. Tomatoes grow very well in them.

I use smaller metal buckets like this to grow small pepper plants, as well as “patio” hybrid tomatoes.

I love shallow containers like this to grow heads of lettuce, salad greens, and radishes.
